As part of your medical exam for a life insurance application, you will often be asked to take a drug test. This will typically be a urine drug test, much like you may have taken at work before, and it usually covers a wide range of drugs.
If you fail for most substances, you will automatically be refused life insurance, but insurers usually allow modest consumption of marijuana and nicotine, although it may affect your premium. Even if you are such a modest user, it may affect your future policy if you test positive during a medical exam. Even if you just had one joint a few days ago, it can still cause a positive on a drug test.
When beating a cannabis testing for life insurance, you should not look to mislead your insurance provider. All insurers have guidelines for what they deem to be acceptable marijuana use, and if you disagree with them, look for a different insurer. However, drug testing may not accurately reflect your current use, and there are ways you can compensate for this.
Option 1: Get clean
The simplest, albeit time-consuming, way to beat a cannabis testing for life insurance is to simply get yourself clean through a detox period. The more often you've been using cannabis, the longer this will take.
A single use will typically stick around in the body for 1-6 days, depending on the amount and strength of the cannabis used, while weekly users are generally clean enough for a drug test after 6-9 days. In both these cases, it's advisable to start a seven-day detox program. At the end of this program, you should test yourself with an inexpensive home-testing device to confirm you're clean enough for a drug test. If you still test positive, continue your abstinence and try again in a few days.
If you've used cannabis often enough and for long enough, it could have built up in your body. This means it could take a month to get clean, possibly longer in extreme cases. If you know you've been a heavier user, it may be best to start with a long-term detox kit. This also includes a detox drink, which we'll explain below.
Option 2: Beating a cannabis testing for life insurance with a detox drink
Despite your best efforts and staying clean for weeks, you may still fail a drug test for cannabis if you were a previously heavy user. In such cases, it's arguable that using a detox drink will help provide a more accurate picture of your current marijuana use, or rather lack of it.
These drinks do not contain masking agents designed to thwart drug tests-instead they just give the urinary system a gentle boost. This then accelerates the normal cleansing processes, particularly urination, which means toxins are expelled faster than the kidneys can filter them from the blood and deposit them in the bladder. When you come to give a urine sample, it should therefore have much lower levels of toxins.
Please note that this effect is temporary, so always get your timing right. You should also always closely follow the directions for whichever detox drink you purchase.
