As you probably already know, hair drug tests have a typical detection time of 90 days. This means that even if you quit using drugs two months ago, you could still fail a drug test. Hair tests tend to be popular for pre-employment drug tests, so this could mean losing out on a dream job that you have already been offered.
But is there a way you can clean your hair before a drug test? What about the baking soda hair detox that people talk about? Will this detox your hair for a drug test, or should you use something else?
About hair drug tests
It will help to first understand a little about hair drug tests. First, a sample of hair is collected, usually the most recent inch and a half, and sent to the lab for testing. At the lab, they dissolve the hair, which releases various toxins that were trapped within the cortex of the hair strands. These toxins would have entered the hair while the cells were developing in the follicle. When these cells were then pushed out as hair, the toxins remained locked within them. Once this happens, not even frequent shampooing will remove them.
The baking soda hair detox
A baking soda hair detox normally involves:
- A teaspoon of baking soda
- Two tablespoons of olive oil
- Half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder
Once you've mixed these ingredients, you massage the mixture into your scalp and then cover and leave it for 10-15 minutes. You can then wash it out with shampoo and conditioner or, if you prefer, use an apple cider vinegar rinse to restore the scalp's pH levels and kill bacteria. This also gives your hair a nice shine.
Does the baking soda hair detox work for drug tests?
While the baking soda hair detox may be great for removing the residue from hair products and unclogging the scalp's pores, it won't help to pass a drug test. The baking soda hair detox is aimed at cleaning the scalp, whereas it's the hair itself that's tested in a drug test.
Feel free to try it anyway, because it does appear to have benefits, but you'll need to use another approach if you want to pass.
Passing a hair drug test
You could shave all your hair, including all body hair, but a far easier way to pass a hair drug test is to use one of detox shampoos on the market. These differ from standard shampoos, because while those only clean the outside of your hair, detox shampoos penetrate deep in the hair strands to dissolve toxins.
Using these products is much the same as using a normal shampoo, although you do need to spend more time massaging it in and take care to ensure you cover all hair. You may also need to let it stand for a while so it can do its work. Some detox shampoos even take a three-stage approach.
Once your hair is treated, you should be safe to take a hair drug test for the rest of the day.
