Benzodiazepines (or benzos for short) are the most commonly prescribed group of drugs on the planet, with them being used to treat conditions like insomnia and anxiety disorders. They're also considered a major drug of abuse, with recreational users usually combining it with other drugs. For this reason, benzos are not included in the standard 5-panel test, but many extended drug tests do include them.
If you've used a benzo like valium recently, you may be in danger of failing a drug test. All drugs pass through your system eventually, but benzos can linger for much longer, making it harder to pass a drug test. So, how long do benzos stay in your system? What else can you do to pass a drug test?
How long do benzos stay in your system?
When it comes to urine tests, your level of use will play a big role in how long it takes to flush benzos out of your system. If you've used some sort of benzo in the short term and at normal dosage, you should be able to pass a urine drug screening after a week of being clean. If, however, you've been using it chronically for over a year, it can take up to 6 weeks to get clean enough to pass a drug test. Fortunately, there are other precautions you can take, which we'll explain later.
If your hair is going be tested, you may also have a problem, because hair drug tests can detect drug use in the previous 90 days. You might be okay if it was a one-off thing, but if you've been using benzos regularly, it's almost certainly going to show up.
In contrast, saliva tests are relatively easy to pass. You only need to avoid benzos for around 6-48 hours before taking a saliva drug test. If this narrow window is still a problem, you can always use a detox mouthwash before giving a saliva sample.
Passing a drug test
If you've been a chronic user of benzos, it may well be impossible to get clean before a drug test. If you have some time, you could try an extensive detox program, but if not, you will be better off looking at emergency detox solutions.
For a urine test, buy a detox drink to use on the day of your test. When taken an hour or two before a test, these drinks put your urinary system into overdrive and flush the various toxins out. This is just a local effect of course, and it only lasts for a few hours, but it gives you a valuable window in which you can safely give a urine sample.
Hair drug tests can also be safely taken if you use a detox shampoo before a drug test. These are generally used much like a normal shampoo, but always follow the instructions for your chosen product. After using one of these, it's usually a good idea to avoid any kind of recontamination, such as by avoiding smoky environments.
