Can I Perform My Own Adulteration Test?
In an attempt to catch out cheaters, labs often perform an adulteration test to ensure the sample hasn´t been tampered with. These seven-in-one testing strips check a variety of chemical markers and indicate if any of them differ from the expected values. The chemical characteristics that are tested include:
- Creatine levels (to detect dilution)
- Nitrates
- Oxidizing agents
- Glutaraldehyde
- pH levels
These tests will indicate if household substances (e.g., bleach, vinegar, baking soda, etc.) have been added to the sample, but it doesn´t stop there. Many commercial additives will also show up on these tests, so be aware of this when using any urine additives.
Using this test is a simple matter of immersing the strip in the sample. You can then compare the strip with the reference color chart to look for any differences.
