There's a rumor that you can take a couple of tablespoons of baking soda with some water and pass a drug test. You might also be thinking of adding it directly to your urine sample to neutralize the test. In either case, will it actually do anything to help you pass the drug test? What's more, will it show up on a UA adulterant test? To help you make a decision, here's a quick guide to using baking soda to pass drug tests.
Using baking soda
Some people say they've passed by drinking baking soda mixed with water, but more often it's a story from a "friend" that did it. Their logic is that by making the body more alkaline, it holds in the drug and prevents it from being detected in urine. In reality, this makes very little difference for drug tests, and plenty of people in jail will testify to this after failing probationary drug tests with this method. If you don't believe us, try it for yourself.
In low quantities, drinking baking soda can help quiet an upset stomach, but in greater quantities, it can make you feel like you're being repeatedly punched in the gut. This is because baking soda produces carbon dioxide gas when it encounters an acid, which the stomach is full of. Try mixing the same amount of baking soda with some vinegar in a balloon. It will almost certainly inflate and burst. Imagine how that much gas would feel inside your body?
Will baking soda show up on a UA adulterant test?
If you consume it, probably not, because your urine's pH will probably still be within normal levels. This is a moot point, though, because it won't work, so there's not much point in taking it and experiencing the discomfort that comes with it.
Adding it directly to your sample, in contrast, will definitely show up on an UA adulterant test, because it will radically change the pH level. This is because baking soda will react with the uric acid in your urine, probably making it also fizz and foam in a suspicious manner. This may actually throw off the actual UA drug test, but again this is a moot point, because you need to pass both the drug test and the adulterant test. Failing the adulterant test will simply mean a retest.
Better ways to pass a drug test
If you don't have the time to let your body detox naturally, you can still pass a UA drug test with a decent detox drink. These drinks don't contain any harsh chemicals, so nothing will show up on an UA adulterant test. Their natural ingredients will, however, rapidly flush your urinary system clean of drugs and their metabolites. This effect won't last forever, because more metabolites will be filtered from the blood over time. However, if you use it correctly, you should have a window of a few hours to safely go to your drug test.
